What to Expect at Your First Party

Everyone remembers their first time attending a kink party. It can be a wonderful, scary, exhilarating experience. You have no idea what to expect. What is going to happen? Will weird people touch you? Are you going to end up spanked by some scary German lady? Let us answer some of your burning questions here!

If you are new to Vortex then welcome! If you let us know when you check in we will take you on a tour, show you around, and introduce you to some people when you arrive. The people that go to Vortex are a very friendly bunch and you will find lots of people who are willing to show you the ropes.

Please be sure to review the Play Party Rules, Drug & Alcohol Policy, and How to Behave at a Play Party before your first event. It will help you feel much more comfortable your first time around!

What can I expect?

You might imagine some crazy free-for-all where there are people having sex and spanking each other all over the place, but the truth is much more casual. We have a lounge and bar which is for socializing and snacking, no play allowed, and there is a main dungeon where you can talk quietly and play or watching play.

During a party there are plenty of people who will only watch. Especially for regulars in the scene, some nights are more for socializing with your friends than for playing. In fact, we recommend that if you are new to the scene that you watch, socialize, and ask questions for your first few parties before jumping in. But that’s up to you!

Overall, you will find that kinky people are a whole lot like regular people.

What should I wear?

Wear whatever makes you feel amazing about yourself. Leather, latex, nice jeans, dress pants, costumes, clubwear, lingerie, just about anything goes as long as you show up to the door in street acceptable clothing.

You will probably see naked people. And not just gorgeous underwear models, real people with real bodies. And that’s wonderful!

Do I have to play?

Absolutely not, but it sure is fun! Sometimes it’s just as much fun, and educational, to watch other people play. “Play” looks like different things to different people. Some people might enjoy being flogged on the St. Andrews Cross or paddled over a knee, some might want to spend time ignored in our cage, you may see some people wearing diapers or dressed as puppies. No fetish or kink will be judged and any play that is safe, sane and consensual is permitted. You may not be comfortable at first, especially if you are new to the BDSM scene but when you are, don’t be afraid to join in!

Will there be sex?

While Vortex is a sex positive event, it is not the focus of our events. We do allow discrete play as a part of your scene, but you will not see anyone going to town in the middle of the dungeon. If you’re thinking of attending in the hopes of an easy hookup, you should really reconsider.

Will there be an opportunity to play if I attend solo?

Many people come to fetish clubs on their own so if you are single that is fine. If you want guaranteed play however, it is always best to attend with a play partner. Other party goers enjoy playing with the people in attendance at their discretion, and there is nothing wrong with respectfully requesting play from someone at a party as long as you are prepared to graciously accept the response.

You do not have to be Dom or sub, and it may take a while for you to work out what you identify as. You may find it is a mix of both, or you may just identify as a kinky person! Either way you are welcome at Vortex and in good company.

What if I see someone I know?

This is the most common concern we hear about public play. Although it is possible, the chances are highly unlikely. It’s important to remember that if you see someone you know at a fetish event, they are there too, which means you won’t be judging each other too harshly. You are more than welcome to wear a mask or hood but you will most likely discover rather quickly that it is unnecessary. It is expected that all guests maintain the confidentiality of others at Vortex parties. What happens at Vortex should stay at Vortex.
